If you wish to enquire about being married in Our Lady and St Charles, and you live outside the parish, you are best advised to speak to your own parish priest about the Church processes which will need to be gone through. Please contact Fr Peter in Keswick (E-Mail) for further information but your own parish priest will have to be involved in any case.
There are three areas of preparation:
Church Documentation: When you have contacted us about the possibility of dates of marrying in the Catholic Church in Keswick please contact your own parish priest to fill in forms, collect documentation and obtain any necessary dispensations. Your own parish priest will also pass on information about locally available marriage preparation courses demanded of you. The forms, once completed, will be sent through diocesan office to the parish priest in Keswick (Your clergy will know about this procedure)
Civil Documentation: At least one of the party will need to register with the local civil authorities in the registration district of Cockermouth and show proof that they have been resident for seven consecutive nights within the district (Includes Keswick, Cockermouth and Workington). Please see the PDF of the leaflet below. This is English civil law and enquiries need to be taken up with the registrar at the telephone number indicated. The priest needs correct civil certificates for both parties to legally marry couples!
Immediate Preparations: for the marriage (Readings, music, flowers etc) can be done in consultation with the priest at Our Lady of the Lakes and St Charles nearer the time of the marriage - however these may well be prpared at preparation courses in your own area.
Couples who are preparing for marriage may find these two resource useful:
Firstly the list of suitable scripture readings suggested by the Church.
Secondly the leaflet from the registrar’s office regarding securing official permission from the stae to get married in a Catholic Church. Please note the references to living in the registration district for a specific number of days (for one of the party). Without this registration, and the delivery of the certificates to the church, the marriage cannot take place.
